Interpreter 1 Auburn State Recreation Area
Join Auburn State Recreation Area Interpreter, Joseph Shanahan, on a virtual tour of Hawver Mine. Located in Auburn SRA about 1.5 miles above the confluence of the North and Middle Forks of the American Rivers is a limestone mine active from 1912 – 1964. It is now closed to the public. The educational talk will explore the origins of the limestone lens, the Pleistocene remains preserved in its breccia, and several generations of mining history.
Joseph Shanahan grew up recreating in the American River Canyons and returned to Auburn to work for State Parks after graduating from Humboldt State in 2020. As an interpreter, Joseph translates nature, science, culture, history and safety to visitors of the American River Canyons. The goal of interpretation is to spread knowledge of the earth, air and water so that educated people will cherish and care for our beautiful natural resources.
